Paint
4 tsp. cornstarch
1 pint water
food coloring
Mix cornstarch with part of the water. Boil the remainder of the water. Add cornstarch mixture. Boil and stir mixture until clear and slightly thickened. Add food color. Store in a jar.
Shiny Paint
Tempera paint, liquid or powdered
White glue
Cups, brushes
Pour white glue into cups Mix your choices of tempera paint in each cup If you use powdered paint, you may need to thin with water Paint on wood, paper, etc. as you would with any paint Paint will dry shiny as if glazed Variations: 1. When dry, glaze entire painting with white glue thinned with water for an extra layer of clear glaze.
2. Paint pine cones, rocks, driftwood, glass
3. Try painting with sponge brushes for a very smooth finish
4. To help paint adhere to shiny, smooth surfaces, add a few drops of dish detergent to the mixture.
Puffy Paint
Equal parts of flour, salt, and water
Bowl, spoon
Liquid tempera
Cardboard squares or heavy paper
Plastic squeeze bottles such as mustard containers
Mix equal parts of flour, salt, and water in a bowl Add tempera paint for color in desired amount Pour into plastic squeeze bottles Squeeze mixture onto cardboard or heavy paper Mixture will harden in a puffy shape Colors will pool together without mixing.
Glue Paint
Add a few drops of a different color of food coloring to each of several empty squeeze bottles. Gradually add glue, using a drinking straw to stir the glue until evenly tinted.
Glue Paint
2 parts glue
1 part water
dry tempera
Mix glue and water. Add mixture to tempera. This paint has a flat finish, it is especially useful for painting on waxed surfaces such as milk cartons. Use soap and water to clean up. Store in tightly cover jar.
Extra Bright Tempera Paint
2 cups dry tempera paint
1 cup liquid soap (clear or white works best)
1 cup liquid starch
Mix the paint and soap, then add starch and stir. If the mixture becomes too thick, add more liquid soap. Store the paint in a coffee can with a plastic lid.
Corn Syrup Paint
Light corn syrup
Food coloring
Divide one or more bottles of corn syrup evenly among several containers. Add a few drops of food coloring to each container and mix until the desired shades are achieve. This paint requires a few days of drying time.
Sand Paint
¼ cup paint powder
1 cup sand
paste
Combine powdered paint and sand in large shakers. Shake on paper covered with paste. May be done outside on the ground without paste.
Paint blowing
Give each child a sheet of construction paper. Put a small amount of paint on the paper. if you use several color, the paint will be more exciting. have the children blow the paint with a straw to create abstract designs. Be sure the children do not put straw in paint and be sure they blow, not suck in the paint.
Marble Painting
Cut pieces of paper the size to fit the bottom of a cake pan. Place several marbles in a container of paint. Have one child place his paper in the pan and put in the wet marbles. The child should grasp two corners of the pan and move the pan so the marbles paint the piece of paper. Then they use marbles that have been dipped in a different color. Repeat process. After the paint is dry, it may be cut into various shapes such as Christmas trees, stars, hearts, etc.
