The Georgia Magistrate Court System has been in place since July 1, 1983. A result of the unification of Georgia's Courts, Magistrate Courts replaced all Justice of the Peace Courts and Small Claims Courts and have since been further expanded to share civil and criminal jurisdiction with state and superior courts.
Lawyers may practice in Georgia Magistrate Courts but litigants are usually able to file and defend cases without the help of a lawyer. Georgia Magistrate Courts are designed to be used by non-lawyers.
