REACH Program


  REACH is the program for gifted students identified under Georgia State Gifted Program criteria.  At West Laurens High School, students are served through advanced placement courses, in resource classes, cluster and collaborative models.   Field trips, individual projects, participation in international programs and competitions, advanced Placement courses, and community service projects are integral parts of the four year program.

In an internet lab provided through a Georgia  DOE Grant in 1995, ninth grade students learn  to construct WebPages, use internet for academic research, and to use Powerpoint, Adobe Pagemaker and other packages in the preparation of individual projects

Mvc-007s.jpg (48111 bytes) Students participate in the Bridges Program with partner schools in Estonia, the Czech Republic, and Romania.  Topics of study through international collaboration include environmental issues local history, and family roots.
History Day.JPG (158358 bytes) Missing Wires: A Who Done It, a play researched and produced by Jennifer, Jessica, Laura, Lara Beth and Martha won first in region and state History Day Competitions and took them to Maryland to compete in Nationals and to tour Washington. This Year Students will participate in March again.

In October, REACH students visited the Atlanta History Center, hiked Stone Mountain, and took the glass elevator up 72 floors for an almost aerial view of Atlanta. In May, students will visit Colonial Williamsburg and Washington, DC, for a week of performances, museums visits, IMAX movies, visits to Congress and other special locations. Use the Field Trip link to see more.

 At Senior Georgia United Nations Assembly (Co-ed Y Club GUNA) in Macon Nov. 30–Dec. 2, (From left to right) Trey Waites, Wesley Huffmaster, Tyler Mullis, and Jess Coleman are eating a small meal of rice and bread with water at the World Hunger Luncheon, a dinner designed to show the struggles that third world nations have with starvation and malnutrition.
cnn.jpg (490457 bytes) Kelly Webb, Christina Huntley, and Wesley Huffmaster represented West Laurens High School at the CNN Studios in Atlanta where they took part in the Mock Election 2000 as a part of there civics class project in November.
The Laurens County Student Exchange Program, established in 1997, links our school to schools in Estonia, France, and other countries.  This semester four students from Tallinna Reaalkool in Tallinn, Estonia, are living with host families and attending our school.
